Staff Writer – The Zimbabwe Taxpayers Platform (ZITAP) is conducting a nationwide survey to gather insights into the taxation experience in Zimbabwe.

This initiative aims to provide valuable data to policymakers, ultimately contributing to the development of a more equitable and effective tax system in the country. The survey is designed to capture the perspectives of various stakeholders, including individuals and businesses, on current tax policies, administrative procedures, and their overall impact on the Zimbabwean economy and society.

The primary goal of ZITAP’s survey is to inform future tax policy decisions and foster a fairer tax system in Zimbabwe.
The survey’s findings are expected to highlight areas where the current tax system may be perceived as burdensome, inefficient, or unfair. By collecting comprehensive feedback, ZITAP intends to present a detailed report to relevant government bodies, advocating for reforms that address the concerns of taxpayers.

This participatory approach is crucial for ensuring that tax policies are not only economically sound but also socially acceptable and conducive to economic growth and development in Zimbabwe. While specific details about the survey’s methodology and preliminary findings are still emerging, the initiative underscores a growing demand for transparency and accountability in tax governance within Zimbabwe.

ZITAP is advocating for a comprehensive review and reform of the existing tax policies to ensure they are progressive, equitable, and conducive to economic growth.

This includes:
Lowering the tax burden on low-income earners: Proposing adjustments to tax brackets and increasing tax-free thresholds to alleviate the financial strain on the majority of the population.

Simplifying the tax code: Advocating for a less complex tax system that is easier for individuals and small businesses to understand and comply with, reducing administrative burdens and opportunities for corruption.

Promoting prudent application of tax incentives: Encouraging fair application of tax incentives, balancing the desire to stimulate investment and job creation with fair distribution of the tax burden and curbing revenue leakages.

Reviewing VAT and excise duties: Analysing the impact of indirect taxes on the cost of living and advocating for adjustments that do not disproportionately affect the poor.

ZITAP is empowering taxpayers with knowledge critical for both compliance and accountability.

ZITAP is conducting nationwide taxpayer education campaigns and informing citizens about their tax rights and obligations.
