Mobility4Happiness
#Mobility4Happiness is a campaign for privatization of the public transport system in Zimbabwe. The Government took over, and created a monopoly on public transport through Statutory Instrument 83 of 2020 under the guise of managing Covid -19. The state-owned Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (ZUPCO) has failed to meet the demands of 10 million daily travelers, 15,000 small private transporters, and 40,000 downstream assistant drivers and parking assistants. This project seeks to bring the 15,000 small private transporters back on the road.
Their demand-driven schedules will bring convenience to travelers as well as economic respite to many small businesses. Whilst the private transporters are back in business, their regulatory framework is not yet in place hence periodic criminalization by the central government and local police forces. Privatization of the public transport sector is best for Zimbabwe!
Key results:
5,000 small transport owners benefitted as they came back to business after the court judgement nullifying the ZUPCO monopoly
40,000 assistant drivers came back to work
10 million (daily and occasional) commuters benefited from the improved service delivery (time, convenience and dignity) brought about by the liberalization of public transport in Zimbabwe
